Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant on Diesel Power for 27th Time

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, Europe’s largest operating reactor complex, has once again turned to emergency diesel fuel supplies, marking the 27th occurrence since Russia’s full‑scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The latest delivery, coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency and Ukrainian authorities, is intended to maintain the plant’s cooling systems amid ongoing disruptions to the regular fuel supply chain caused by military activity in the region.

Since the conflict began, repeated shelling, drone attacks and the occupation of parts of the facility have forced the plant to depend on ad‑hoc diesel shipments to ensure safe operation. The repeated reliance on emergency fuel underscores the persistent vulnerability of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and highlights the international community’s continued involvement in preventing a nuclear safety incident.
