Young Men Lead Sextortion Complaints, eSafety Report Finds
In the first half of last year, Australia’s online safety regulator, eSafety, received more than 2,000 complaints about online sexual exploitation and extortion. A new transparency report released by the agency highlights significant gaps in how major technology platforms—Apple, Meta, Google, Microsoft, Snap, Discord, and WhatsApp—address these abuses, noting that reports of such incidents continue to rise.
The report details how each platform’s current policies and response mechanisms fall short of the regulatory expectations set by the Australian government. While some companies have implemented content‑moderation tools and user‑reporting features, the findings point to inconsistencies in enforcement, delayed removal of offending material, and insufficient collaboration with law‑enforcement agencies. eSafety stresses that the gaps undermine the safety of children and vulnerable users online.
The regulator’s analysis calls for stronger accountability measures and clearer guidelines for tech firms, urging them to enhance detection, reporting, and removal processes. eSafety’s report serves as a benchmark for future policy reviews and underscores the ongoing challenge of safeguarding users against online sexual exploitation.
