Yayoi Kusama exhibition draws record 470,000 visitors at Cologne's Museum Ludwig
Museum Ludwig in Cologne announced that its most recent exhibition, which opened on 12 March 2024, attracted nearly 470 000 visitors, setting a new attendance record for the institution. The show, titled “Pop Art Reimagined,” ran until 30 April and drew crowds from across Europe, the United States, and Asia, making it the museum’s most successful event in its 40‑year history.
“Pop Art Reimagined” featured a curated selection of works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and contemporary artists such as Takashi Murakami and KAWS, alongside rare archival material and interactive installations. The exhibition’s blend of classic and contemporary pop art, combined with digital media displays, appealed to a broad audience, boosting ticket sales and media coverage. Prior to this, the museum’s highest‑attended show had drawn just over 350 000 visitors in 2018.
The record turnout underscores Museum Ludwig’s growing prominence as a leading venue for contemporary art in Europe. The success is expected to influence the museum’s future programming, encouraging further large‑scale exhibitions and collaborations that aim to attract both local visitors and international tourists.
