Wildfires near Bordeaux force evacuations as France and Spain battle record blazes

A massive wildfire that erupted in southwestern France on Sunday has threatened the city of Bordeaux, lying just 15 kilometres from the blaze’s epicentre. French authorities report that the fire has already displaced roughly 300,000 residents across both France and Spain, prompting coordinated firefighting efforts across the two nations. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the situation in Bordeaux as “unprecedented,” underscoring the severity of the crisis.

The conflagration has spread rapidly through forested areas, compelling authorities to evacuate thousands of homes and mobilise thousands of firefighters. In Spain, the Avila region has endured its worst blaze in recent history, with the fire consuming extensive woodland and forcing additional evacuations. Both countries have deployed aerial and ground resources, including helicopters, water‑dropping aircraft, and specialised fire‑fighting units, to contain the spread and protect populated areas.

Despite the intense efforts, the wildfires continue to pose a significant threat to the region’s infrastructure and residents.
