Wildfires force evacuation of over 20,000 in southwest France

Wildfires are raging across western Europe, with scorching temperatures and strong winds driving the flames to spread more rapidly and burn more intensely. Climate‑change experts say such conditions are making fires grow faster and harder to control, and the total area scorched in EU countries this year has already reached the second‑largest figure on record. In France, three heatwaves since May have intensified the blaze, forcing more than 20,000 people to evacuate from the southwest region.

Firefighting crews, numbering around 800 firefighters and supported by hundreds of gendarmes and soldiers, are battling the flames approximately 50 kilometres west of Bordeaux. The crisis unfolds amid the peak summer holiday season, and many of those displaced are tourists who had come to enjoy the area. Dutch tourist Barry Pollack, one of the evacuees, told reporters that the situation felt “intense and frightening” as the community worked to contain the fire.

The authorities have urged residents and visitors to heed evacuation orders and stay away from the affected zones while the firefighting effort continues. As the summer progresses, officials remain vigilant, monitoring weather conditions and coordinating resources to prevent further spread and protect lives and property.
