Wildfire Smoke May Not Prompt Animals to Flee
A study by Oregon State University (OSU) biologists challenges assumptions about how animals respond to wildfire smoke, revealing that toxic air from such events does not necessarily drive species to relocate for better air quality. Led by OSU’s Jamie Cornelius, the research focused on American robins, a common bird species, and found that these animals did not exhibit significant behavioral changes or avoidance of areas affected by wildfire smoke. The findings, published as fire seasons grow longer and more severe due to climate change, offer new insights into the complex relationship between environmental stressors and wildlife responses.
The study, conducted in collaboration with OSU research associate Alex Jahn and graduate students Dorothy Zahor and Ken Glynn, observed American robins in regions impacted by wildfire smoke over multiple years. Researchers monitored the birds’ movements, foraging patterns, and habitat use, comparing data from smoky and clear conditions. Contrary to expectations, the robins showed no marked tendency to abandon smoky areas, suggesting their physiological tolerance or behavioral adaptability may override the urge to flee. This could have broader implications for understanding how other species might cope with worsening air quality linked to escalating wildfire activity.
The research underscores the need for further exploration into how animals navigate environmental challenges posed by climate change.
