WHO calls for intensified response as DRC Ebola cases near 4,000

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is facing a rapidly expanding Ebola outbreak, the seventeenth in the country, which was officially declared in mid‑May. Health officials report that the number of infections has surged, and the epidemic has already claimed more than 1,700 lives, underscoring the severity of the crisis.

In response, the World Health Organization has urged an “intensified” medical effort. Teams of doctors have been dispatched to the DRC, and specialized treatment centers have been established in the provinces most affected by the virus. Concurrently, clinical trials aimed at identifying an effective vaccine are continuing, as researchers seek to curb further spread and reduce mortality.

The DRC government, supported by international partners, remains focused on scaling up diagnostic capacity, contact tracing, and community outreach to contain the outbreak. Continued vigilance and coordinated action are essential to prevent additional deaths and to bring the epidemic under control.
