Wessex Water CEO Receives Above-Inflation Pay Rise
Wessex Water has approved a 14 percent increase in the remuneration of chief executive Ruth Jefferson, raising her base salary from £590,000 to £670,000 in October. Including additional benefits, the total pay package for the year is set at £791,000, a figure that is more than eighteen times the median earnings of the company’s workforce and considerably higher than the 3.5 percent inflation‑linked rise granted to rank‑and‑file staff. The pay rise was confirmed in the firm’s latest accounts, which were published this month despite a regulatory ban on awarding bonuses following a series of sewage spill incidents earlier in the year.
The increase has drawn criticism from the Water and Wastewater Services Union, which described the remuneration as “obscene” and accused senior managers of “feathering their own nests.” Union representatives highlighted the contrast between the executive’s pay and the modest wage adjustments for employees, and pointed to the ban on bonuses as evidence of broader governance concerns. Wessex Water has not commented on the union’s statements, and the company’s next financial review will determine whether further adjustments to executive compensation are forthcoming.
