Waze adds Gemini AI features to improve voice navigation

Google has announced an AI‑powered overhaul of its Waze navigation app, integrating its flagship Gemini assistant to give drivers more personalized routing options. The update is part of a broader strategy to make navigation more conversational and responsive, allowing users to interact with the app in a way that mirrors natural speech.

Among the four new features, two specifically leverage Gemini. First, Waze is upgrading its Conversation Reporting tool—introduced in 2024—to enable drivers to issue voice commands that report traffic incidents or suggest map edits, such as road closures or outdated addresses. Second, the Destination Search feature lets users ask Gemini to locate nearby points of interest, for example, “Find me a coffee shop that’s open,” and receive instant, context‑aware results. These enhancements aim to streamline the reporting process and improve the accuracy of the map data.

The Verge reports that the AI integration is designed to make navigation more intuitive, reducing the need for manual input while driving.
