Volvo unveils long‑range plug‑in hybrid XC60 and XC90 with up to 78 miles electric range

Volvo Cars announced that the latest plug‑in hybrid electric (PHEV) versions of its XC60 and XC90 sport‑utility vehicles now offer substantially longer electric‑only ranges than earlier models. While most PHEVs on the market today achieve roughly 30 to 50 miles on battery power, the Swedish manufacturer says its updated XC60 and XC90 can travel 78 miles and 73 miles respectively on a single charge, according to preliminary EPA testing data. Volvo describes the two models as its first “long‑range plug‑in hybrids,” positioning them as class leaders in electric‑only mileage.

The extended range represents more than a doubling of the electric capability of previous Volvo PHEV variants and arrives as hybrid sales continue to dominate the broader automotive market. Volvo has not yet released final, independently verified figures, but if the EPA‑based estimates hold, the new XC60 and XC90 could set a new benchmark for plug‑in hybrids in the luxury SUV segment. The company plans to roll out the updated models later this year, aiming to attract buyers seeking greater electric driving flexibility without sacrificing the utility of a full‑size SUV.
