Virunga National Park uses health checkpoints to combat Ebola in eastern DRC

Health checkpoints and intensified disease surveillance have been deployed in the Virunga and Bwindi mountain regions as authorities work to contain a recent outbreak that threatens the critically endangered mountain gorilla populations. The measures, introduced this week by the Rwanda Development Board, Uganda Wildlife Authority and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ministry of Environment, aim to limit the spread of the pathogen among both humans and the 1,000‑plus gorillas that inhabit the fragmented forest corridors.

The response includes mandatory health screenings at park entry points, daily temperature checks for guides and tourists, and rapid testing of any symptomatic individuals. Rangers and veterinary teams are conducting systematic monitoring of gorilla groups, collecting fecal samples and tracking movement patterns to identify potential hotspots. The coordinated effort follows a spike in respiratory infections reported among local communities and a small number of confirmed cases in habituated gorilla troops, prompting the suspension of non‑essential trekking permits and the implementation of strict quarantine protocols for any animals showing signs of illness. Conservation partners such as the World Wildlife Fund and the Great Apes Survival Partnership are providing logistical support and technical expertise to ensure the surveillance network remains operational.

Officials expect the combined checkpoint and surveillance strategy to reduce transmission risk and safeguard the remaining mountain gorilla subpopulations, which have rebounded from historic lows but remain vulnerable to disease. Ongoing data collection will inform adaptive management, and authorities have pledged to lift restrictions only after sustained evidence of containment, thereby balancing public health concerns with the long‑term conservation of the iconic primates.
