Virtual Reality Reduces Anxiety in Cardiac Imaging
Patients with anxiety or claustrophobia often find it difficult to complete cardiac imaging procedures such as positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) scans. The confined spaces and the need for stillness during these examinations can trigger intense discomfort, leading to incomplete studies or the need for sedation. As a result, clinicians may miss critical diagnostic information needed to assess heart disease.
Medical centers are increasingly adopting strategies to mitigate these challenges. Pre‑procedure counseling, the use of open‑bore scanners, and the availability of anxiolytic medications are among the measures being implemented to improve patient tolerance. In some facilities, virtual reality or music therapy is also offered to reduce stress and help patients remain still during image acquisition.
By addressing the psychological barriers that impede cardiac imaging, healthcare providers can enhance diagnostic accuracy and reduce the need for repeat scans. Continued research into patient‑friendly imaging techniques and support services will be essential to ensure that all individuals receive the comprehensive cardiac care they require.
