Vietnam veterans seek court block of Trump's proposed triumphal arch

Vietnam War veterans, led by Michael Lemmon, Shaun Byrnes, and Jon Gundersen, together with architectural historian Calder Loth, have filed a lawsuit seeking an emergency court order to halt President Donald Trump’s administration from proceeding with the construction of a proposed triumphal arch in the Washington, D.C. area. The veterans argue that the monument, which the administration intends to break ground on imminently, would be a disrespectful and inappropriate tribute to the nation’s military history.

The temporary restraining order request alleges that the arch would violate federal historic preservation laws and that the administration’s plans would cause irreparable harm to the national capital’s historic landscape. The plaintiffs contend that the monument’s design and location are inconsistent with the guidelines set by the National Capital Planning Commission and that the project could set a precedent for future federal commemorative structures that disregard established preservation standards. The lawsuit was filed in federal court with the plaintiffs seeking immediate relief to prevent the groundbreaking ceremony, which is scheduled to take place within the next few weeks.

If granted, the restraining order would pause all construction activities and compel the administration to submit a revised plan that complies with historic preservation regulations. The court is expected to hold a hearing on the emergency request within the next ten days, after which it will decide whether to issue the order and what further legal steps may be required to address the veterans’ concerns.
