Venice Regata Storica fills Grand Canal with historic boats

Historic boats glided down Venice’s Grand Canal on Saturday as the city hosted the annual Regata Storica, drawing large crowds of spectators near the iconic Rialto Bridge. The event, a centuries‑old celebration of Venetian maritime heritage, featured a procession of traditional gondolas, galee, and other historic vessels that traced the waterway from the western end of the city to the historic St. Mark’s Basin.

Organizers highlighted the Regata Storica’s role in preserving rowing traditions, with more than 300 participants representing rowing clubs from across Italy and abroad competing in a series of races that culminated in a ceremonial finish near St. Mark’s Square. The spectacle, accompanied by music and period costumes, attracted tourists and locals alike, reinforcing the cultural significance of the waterborne sport in Venice’s identity.
