A new study from Edith Cowan University (ECU) highlights how vegetable consumption in one’s 20s may influence long-term health, with findings suggesting that men and women derive distinct benefits from specific vegetables in reducing risks of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Analyzing data from the Western Australian-based Raine Study, researchers observed sex-specific responses to certain vegetables, indicating that dietary choices during early adulthood could have lasting implications for metabolic and cardiovascular health.
The research, which tracked participants over time, identified variations in how male and female bodies process nutrients from different vegetables. For example, leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli appeared to offer stronger protective effects for women against type 2 diabetes, while men showed greater cardiovascular benefits from root vegetables such as carrots and beets. These differences may stem from biological factors, including hormonal influences and metabolic pathways, though further investigation is needed to clarify mechanisms.
The findings underscore the potential for personalized dietary guidelines tailored to sex, emphasizing the importance of early-life nutrition in preventing chronic diseases.
