Vatican excommunicates SSPX bishops and members after unauthorized consecrations

The Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has imposed severe disciplinary measures on the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), an ultratraditionalist Catholic group. The sanctions follow the society’s unauthorized consecration of bishops, an act that violated the Church’s canonical requirement for papal approval. The decree, issued on Thursday, restricts the SSPX’s ability to hold public liturgies and limits its use of the Tridentine Mass, while also prohibiting the society from celebrating the Eucharist in the name of the Pope.

The decision reflects the Holy See’s long‑standing effort to bring the SSPX back into full communion with Rome. In 2009, the society had entered into a provisional agreement with the Vatican, but the consecrations carried out in 2009 and 2016—without the Pope’s consent—were deemed a breach of that accord.
