Utah launches million-panel solar and battery storage facility
Utah has opened a new solar‑powered battery storage complex that ranks among the largest in the Intermountain West. The facility, located near the town of Cedar City, combines 50 MW of photovoltaic panels with a 20 MW/40 MWh lithium‑ion battery bank, giving the state a significant boost in renewable generation and grid flexibility.
Construction was completed last month by Clean Energy Partners, a joint venture of two regional utilities, at a cost of $120 million. The solar array covers 300 acres of desert land and is designed to supply up to 200 MW of power during peak demand periods, while the battery system can discharge for up to 2 hours to smooth fluctuations and support emergency backup. The project is expected to cut Utah’s carbon emissions by roughly 70,000 metric tons annually and provide a more resilient supply for the state’s growing electricity needs.
The new plant underscores Utah’s commitment to expanding clean energy infrastructure. With the battery’s rapid response capabilities, the state can better integrate intermittent solar output and reduce reliance on fossil‑fuel peaker plants. As utilities across the region seek to modernize their grids, the Cedar City facility is poised to serve as a model for large‑scale renewable and storage projects in the western United States.
