Used EV Batteries Retain 90% Capacity After 150,000 km
A recent study has found that electric vehicles (EVs) can retain roughly 90 % of their original usable battery capacity after driving 150,000 kilometres. The research, conducted by a team of automotive engineers at the University of Stuttgart in collaboration with the German Association of the Automotive Industry, analysed a sample of 120 second‑hand EVs ranging from 2015 to 2020. Using a combination of on‑board diagnostics and laboratory testing, the team measured the state‑of‑charge curves and internal resistance of each battery pack to assess degradation over time.
The findings indicate that most modern lithium‑ion batteries experience a gradual decline in capacity, but the rate of loss slows significantly after the first 100,000 kilometres. The study reports an average capacity loss of only 10 % at the 150,000‑kilometre mark, with variations largely tied to battery chemistry, charging habits, and ambient temperature. Industry observers note that this level of retention could make used EVs more attractive to consumers and support the growth of a secondary battery market.
These results suggest that used electric vehicles may offer near‑new performance at a lower price point, potentially easing the transition to cleaner transportation. The study’s authors recommend further research into long‑term battery health across different driving conditions to refine resale valuations and inform warranty policies.
