A new approach to reducing the painful side effects of chemotherapy has emerged, suggesting that patients could take a hallucinogenic compound found in magic mushrooms before treatment. The proposal is based on preliminary studies indicating that psilocybin, the psychoactive ingredient in these mushrooms, may modulate pain perception and alleviate nausea and anxiety associated with cytotoxic therapy. Researchers point to early-phase trials in which patients receiving psilocybin reported significant reductions in chemotherapy‑induced nausea and improved mood, though the studies were small and not specifically designed to evaluate pain outcomes.
