US restricts visas for South African officials over racial inequality concerns

Washington – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday that South Africa has not yet responded to American concerns regarding persistent racial inequality in the country. In a briefing at the State Department, Rubio referenced recent reports from U.S. human‑rights monitors and the Department of State’s annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, which highlight disparities in employment, education and access to public services that continue to affect Black South Africans disproportionately. He noted that the United States has raised these issues through diplomatic channels over the past year, urging the South African government to implement concrete policy reforms and to engage in a transparent dialogue with civil‑society groups.

Rubio added that the lack of a substantive response could affect bilateral cooperation, including trade and development assistance programs. He indicated that Washington will continue to monitor the situation and will consider additional diplomatic measures if progress remains stalled. South African officials have not yet issued a formal reply to the remarks, and the matter is expected to be discussed in upcoming meetings between the two nations’ foreign ministries. The United States reaffirmed its commitment to supporting equitable development and human‑rights initiatives in South Africa while urging swift action to address the identified inequalities.
