US officials say Iran peace talks will continue after Trump ends MoU

Former President Donald Trump declared that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Iran is “over,” a statement that has drawn a swift response from the Biden administration. The MoU, signed in 2023 to extend the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, was intended to keep Iran’s nuclear program under strict limits while the United States and its allies sought a comprehensive deal. Trump’s remarks, made in a recent interview, were framed as a critique of the current diplomatic framework and a call for a different approach to U.S.–Iran relations.

Washington’s officials, however, have reiterated their commitment to continue negotiations with Tehran. The State Department and the National Security Council issued a joint statement affirming that the United States remains open to dialogue and will pursue a path that safeguards national security interests while encouraging Iran to return to compliance with international nuclear non‑proliferation norms. The administration underscored that the MoU’s expiration does not signal an end to engagement, but rather an opportunity to revisit the terms of the agreement in a broader diplomatic context.
