US House Advances Bill to Make Daylight Saving Time Permanent

The US House of Representatives has taken a significant step towards adopting daylight saving time (DST) year-round. On Tuesday, lawmakers voted in favor of the Sunshine Protection Act, with 308 members supporting the bill and 117 opposing it. This development brings the country closer to permanently advancing clocks by one hour, eliminating the need for bi-annual time changes.

Proponents of the bill, including former President Donald Trump, argue that the change would save significant costs and administrative efforts associated with adjusting clocks twice a year. In a statement on Truth Social, Trump claimed that the bill would save "hundreds of millions of dollars" spent by individuals, cities, and states on time changes. Additionally, a 2013 estimate by the American Enterprise Institute suggested that the bi-annual time changes result in significant productivity losses and economic costs.

The passage of the Sunshine Protection Act in the House is a crucial step towards making DST permanent in the US. The bill now moves to the Senate, where it will face further debate and voting. If ultimately approved, the change is expected to take effect in 2023, aligning the country with states that have already adopted year-round DST.
