US Congress passes sanctions on Russia that affect China and India
U.S. lawmakers have passed a comprehensive sanctions package aimed at crippling Russia’s economy and pressuring President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle. The legislation, which now awaits President Donald Trump’s signature, expands existing measures to target a broader range of Russian financial institutions, energy firms, and individuals linked to the Kremlin, while also imposing travel bans and asset freezes on senior officials and their families. Lawmakers said the bill is designed to intensify economic pressure in response to Moscow’s ongoing military actions and to deter further aggression.
In addition to the sanctions, the bill authorizes steep tariffs on countries that purchase Russian oil, specifically naming China and India as major importers. The tariffs, set to rise sharply if the legislation is enacted, aim to reduce demand for Russian energy exports and compel foreign buyers to seek alternative sources. Officials noted that the combined approach of sanctions and tariffs seeks to isolate Russia financially and limit its revenue streams, signaling a heightened U.S. commitment to countering Russian influence on the global stage.
