US Announces 25% Tariffs on Selected Brazilian Imports

Beef, coffee and rare‑earth materials have been excluded from a slate of tariffs the United States is preparing to impose on Brazil, officials said Thursday. The move comes as Washington escalates a trade dispute with Rio de Janeiro over what it describes as unfair subsidies and market‑distorting practices in Brazil’s agricultural and mineral sectors. While the broader tariff package targets a range of Brazilian exports, the three categories were left out after intensive negotiations between the two governments and pressure from industry groups concerned about supply chain disruptions.

U.S. trade officials indicated that the exemption reflects a desire to maintain stable market access for commodities that are integral to both economies, noting that beef and coffee account for billions of dollars in annual bilateral trade and that rare‑earth elements are critical to U.S. technology supply chains. Brazil has welcomed the decision, stating it will continue to address the United States’ concerns through the World Trade Organization while seeking a comprehensive resolution.
