A University of Rochester Medicine research team has released findings that challenge the prevailing view on the safety of a widely used blood transfusion practice. The study, which analyzed outcomes from a large cohort of patients receiving the specific transfusion type, reports a higher incidence of adverse events than previously documented. These events include increased rates of transfusion reactions, organ dysfunction, and longer hospital stays.
The research team examined data from several hospitals over a five‑year period, controlling for patient demographics, underlying conditions, and transfusion volumes.
