University of Iowa Study: Parents Should Pair Words with Gestures to Aid Child Learning
As children return to school, a new study from the University of Iowa shows that parents can boost their kids’ learning by literally aligning with their children’s brain activity. Researchers recorded the neural signals of parents and their children simultaneously while the children performed reading and math tasks. They found that when a parent’s brain rhythms matched the child’s, the child’s comprehension and problem‑solving improved more than when the rhythms were out of sync.
The study used electroencephalography to track oscillatory activity in both brains, revealing that shared patterns of alpha and theta waves—often associated with attention and memory—were linked to better academic performance. Parents who mirrored the child’s pacing, tone, and emotional tone during instruction helped maintain this neural synchrony. The researchers suggest that simple, everyday practices—such as speaking at a similar rhythm or matching the child’s enthusiasm—can create a more conducive learning environment.
