UN watchdog urges India to address hate crimes against Bengali Muslims

The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) has urged India to intensify its response to hate crimes targeting Bengali‑speaking Muslims and to broaden protective measures for other vulnerable communities. In its recent review, the committee highlighted a series of incidents in which members of the Bengali‑speaking Muslim population faced discrimination, violence, and intimidation, noting that these acts contravene India’s obligations under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, to which the country is a signatory.

CERD called on the Indian government to adopt comprehensive strategies that include stricter enforcement of existing hate‑crime statutes, the establishment of specialized investigative units, and the implementation of awareness‑raising programs aimed at preventing communal hostility. The committee also recommended that India extend its protective framework to encompass additional groups that have reported similar threats, emphasizing the need for regular monitoring and transparent reporting mechanisms to ensure compliance with international human‑rights standards.
