UN urges Taliban to disclose investigations of security force abuses

Five years after the Taliban seized power, the United Nations warned on Monday that Afghans have virtually no means of determining whether security personnel who abuse their authority are held accountable. The UN’s human‑rights office highlighted that soldiers, police officers and “morality” enforcers operate with little transparency, leaving the public uncertain about any disciplinary or legal actions taken against them.

The organization said the persistent secrecy surrounding investigations and punishments is eroding confidence in the state’s institutions. It called for clearer mechanisms for reporting misconduct, independent oversight, and publicly disclosed outcomes to restore trust and ensure that violations of the law are addressed in accordance with international standards.
