UN Syria Inquiry Demands Answers on Missing Detainees

UN investigators have called on the Syrian government to locate and account for thousands of missing detainees and to prosecute those responsible for abuses. The appeal follows a week‑long inspection that documented a series of bombings in Damascus, visits to detention facilities in the northeast, and accounts of vigilante violence in Homs.

During the mission, teams recorded evidence of targeted attacks on civilian areas in the capital, inspected overcrowded prisons in the northeastern region, and interviewed witnesses who described extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances. The investigators noted that many detainees remain unaccounted for, and that the security forces’ actions have raised serious concerns under international human rights law.
