UN Supports ICC's Role in Global Justice Efforts

The United Nations reaffirmed on Monday the indispensable role of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the worldwide effort to eradicate impunity for the most serious crimes, countering growing calls from some states and political groups to dismantle the tribunal. In a formal statement issued by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the organization highlighted the ICC’s mandate to prosecute genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression, emphasizing that its existence strengthens the international rule of law.

The UN’s endorsement comes amid heightened debate over the court’s jurisdiction and effectiveness, with several nations arguing that the ICC infringes on national sovereignty and has been selectively applied. Critics have pointed to perceived biases in investigations and the court’s limited enforcement capabilities, urging reforms or outright abolition.
