UN Secretary-General calls on leaders to invest in peace amid rising conflicts

The United Nations Secretary‑General issued an appeal on Wednesday urging governments and other decision‑makers to increase investment in peacebuilding as escalating violence, societal division and armed conflict intensify human suffering across the globe. Speaking at a high‑level gathering in New York, he highlighted that the cumulative impact of wars in Ukraine, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the turmoil in Sudan and other flashpoints is eroding development gains and deepening poverty, displacement and loss of life.

In his remarks, the Secretary‑General called for a coordinated approach that channels greater resources into preventive diplomacy, mediation, and the strengthening of UN peacekeeping and peace‑building operations. He emphasized that sustained financial support and political commitment are essential to address the root causes of conflict and to integrate peace objectives into broader development and climate agendas. The appeal concluded with a request that world leaders prioritize peace as a strategic investment to mitigate further hardship and promote long‑term stability.
