UN says Syrian reactor could produce fissile material

The chief of the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has warned that a clandestine facility built during the reign of former Syrian president Bashar al‑Assad could have produced fissile material suitable for nuclear weapons. In a statement released after a month‑long inspection, the IAEA director noted that the plant, which was reportedly a nearly complete nuclear reactor, possessed the technical capability to generate weapons‑grade material.

During the inspection, IAEA teams visited two sites in Syria, one located in Deir ez‑Zor and a second at an undisclosed location supplied by Syrian authorities. The inspectors examined the infrastructure and equipment, concluding that the facilities had the potential to support a nuclear weapons program had the regime pursued that path. The findings underscore the continued international concern over Syria’s nuclear ambitions and the importance of monitoring compliance with non‑proliferation agreements.
