UN says Sudan's war economy fuels ongoing conflict, urges legal compliance

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has urged all parties involved in the ongoing conflict in Sudan, as well as corporations engaged in the country’s commodity value chain, to adhere strictly to international law. The call follows reports of widespread human rights violations amid the fighting, and highlights the role of businesses that rely on Sudanese resources such as oil, gold, and agricultural products.

OHCHR’s statement stresses that the protection of civilians and the observance of humanitarian principles are paramount, regardless of the parties’ status or the commercial interests at stake. It urges companies to conduct due diligence to ensure their supply chains are free from forced labor, exploitation, and other abuses that may arise from the conflict. The organization also calls for transparent reporting and cooperation with independent monitors to verify compliance.

By aligning commercial operations with international legal standards, OHCHR believes that both the humanitarian situation on the ground and the integrity of Sudan’s commodity markets can be safeguarded.
