UN rights chief warns Israeli strikes in Lebanon may breach international law

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk concluded a two‑day visit to Lebanon on Monday, voicing alarm over the continued displacement of civilians and the widespread destruction caused by Israeli airstrikes in the south. Türk said the humanitarian toll was mounting, with thousands of families forced to leave their homes and critical infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, repeatedly damaged.

During his stay, Türk met with Lebanese officials, local NGOs, and affected residents to assess the situation on the ground. He called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, stressing that the protection of civilians must remain a priority. The chief also highlighted the need for urgent humanitarian aid and the reopening of supply routes to deliver essential services to the besieged communities.
