UN rights chief urges end to civilian attacks in Sudan war

The United Nations Human Rights Council convened on Monday to address the escalating conflict in Sudan, with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk urging an immediate cessation of attacks on civilians. Türk highlighted recent incidents in which markets, hospitals and fuel stations have been targeted, underscoring the growing humanitarian toll of the war that has persisted for more than a year.

Council members were reminded that the continued violence threatens the delivery of essential services and violates international humanitarian law. The High Commissioner called on all parties to respect civilian protection norms and to allow unhindered humanitarian access, emphasizing that the protection of non‑combatants must become a priority in any forthcoming peace efforts.
