UN reports rising restrictions on freedoms in Uganda threaten opposition and media

Uganda is witnessing a widening climate of fear as the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) reports a surge in restrictions on fundamental freedoms. The office highlighted that recent governmental measures have increasingly curtailed the rights of opposition supporters, journalists, human‑rights defenders and civil‑society organizations, exposing them to a heightened risk of abuse and intimidation.

The OHCHR’s assessment points to a pattern of legal and administrative actions that limit freedom of expression, assembly and association, creating an environment in which dissenting voices are vulnerable to harassment, arbitrary detention and other forms of repression. The United Nations body urged Ugandan authorities to reverse these trends, safeguard the rights of all citizens and ensure that any security measures comply with international human‑rights standards.
