UN report says Israeli forces displaced residents of three West Bank refugee camps

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released a report this week stating that Israeli security forces forcibly displaced the entire populations of three Palestinian refugee camps in the occupied West Bank during January and February of last year. The report documents that residents were removed from their homes and that the authorities have continued to bar them from returning to the camps.

According to the OHCHR findings, the displacement and the ongoing denial of access constitute a breach of international humanitarian law, including provisions of the Fourth Geneva Convention that protect civilians in occupied territories. The report details that the forced evictions were carried out by security personnel and that subsequent measures have prevented the displaced residents from re‑entering the camps, effectively leaving them without shelter or means to resume normal life.

The UN human‑rights office has called on Israeli authorities to facilitate the immediate and unconditional return of the displaced populations and to ensure compliance with international legal standards. The OHCHR emphasized that monitoring mechanisms should be established to verify that the camps are accessible again and that the rights of the affected residents are respected.
