UN report provides roadmap for sustainable blue economies
A United Nations report co‑authored by researchers from the University of Portsmouth offers governments a practical roadmap for developing sustainable blue economies. The document arrives as pollution, climate change and biodiversity loss intensify pressure on marine and freshwater ecosystems that underpin the livelihoods of billions and underpin a global ocean economy valued at roughly US$2.2 trillion.
The report outlines policy measures, investment priorities and governance frameworks designed to protect water resources while fostering economic growth in sectors such as fisheries, tourism, renewable energy and maritime transport. By linking ecosystem health to economic resilience, the guidance aims to help nations balance development goals with the urgent need to restore and preserve aquatic environments, positioning the blue economy as a cornerstone of future sustainable development.
