UN official urges international aid for Syria's post-war reconstruction

Damascus is embarking on a large‑scale reconstruction effort after more than ten years of conflict, a process that has been complicated by recent political shifts such as the dissolution of the Kurdish‑led Syrian Democratic Forces and the United States’ decision to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism. In a briefing to the United Nations Security Council on Thursday, a senior UN official highlighted that while the Syrian government is making progress in rebuilding infrastructure and restoring basic services, significant gaps remain in areas such as de‑mining, housing, health care and the reintegration of displaced populations.

The UN representative urged member states to sustain and expand international assistance, emphasizing that coordinated financial aid, technical expertise and humanitarian support are essential to address the lingering challenges and to ensure a stable, inclusive recovery. The official’s remarks underscored the Council’s role in mobilizing resources and monitoring implementation, calling for a continued global commitment to Syria’s post‑war reconstruction.
