UN launches $50 million appeal for Nepal flood survivors as death toll tops 1,300

The United Nations has launched a $50 million humanitarian appeal to assist more than 84,000 people displaced by recent monsoon floods in Nepal. The appeal, announced by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), comes as flood‑affected communities face heightened risk of cholera and severe sanitation shortfalls, prompting urgent calls for resources to prevent a public‑health emergency.

The funding is earmarked for emergency water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions, cholera surveillance, medical treatment, temporary shelter and food distribution, as well as support for the Nepalese government’s recovery plans. UN agencies, together with international partners, will coordinate the delivery of services and infrastructure repairs, aiming to restore safe water access and reduce disease transmission while stabilising livelihoods. The appeal seeks contributions from donor nations and private entities to meet the immediate needs and to lay the groundwork for longer‑term resilience in the flood‑hit regions.
