UN investigators say accountability essential for Syria's transition

UN independent investigators addressed the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday, emphasizing that any durable political transition in Syria must be underpinned by comprehensive accountability, broad-based inclusion and firm assurances that past violations will not be repeated. The panel, which monitors alleged war crimes and human‑rights abuses in the eight‑year conflict, warned that without these safeguards, prospects for lasting peace remain uncertain.

In their briefing, the investigators called for mechanisms to investigate and prosecute perpetrators, the participation of all Syrian constituencies in future governance structures, and legally binding guarantees to prevent recurrence of abuses. They urged the Council and member states to translate these principles into concrete actions, noting that accountability and inclusivity are essential to rebuilding trust and securing a sustainable settlement in the war‑torn country.
