UN General Assembly approves merger of learning bodies to create new institute

The United Nations General Assembly voted to approve the merger of two existing UN learning and training entities, establishing a single, consolidated institution. The decision, taken during the latest plenary session, aims to streamline capacity‑building efforts and provide more coordinated support to Member States as well as to the broader UN system.

The newly formed body will combine the mandates, resources and expertise of the predecessor agencies, creating a unified platform for knowledge sharing, professional development and technical assistance. By centralising these functions, the UN seeks to enhance the effectiveness of its training programmes, improve responsiveness to emerging global challenges, and reinforce its overall capacity‑building architecture.
