UN chief calls for overhaul of post‑WWII institutions as emerging economies rise

New Delhi – United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres addressed leaders of a coalition of major emerging economies on Sunday, urging a comprehensive overhaul of the post‑World War II international architecture. He said a more balanced global order cannot be achieved without reforming institutions such as the United Nations Security Council, whose composition and decision‑making he described as “out of step” with contemporary geopolitical realities.

Guterres highlighted that the same concerns have been raised by many of the bloc’s members regarding the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, which they argue reflect a legacy of power distribution that no longer mirrors today’s economic landscape. He called for an inclusive dialogue to explore structural changes, noting that the United Nations is prepared to facilitate discussions that could lead to a more equitable representation of all nations in global governance. The remarks come as the group prepares for forthcoming multilateral meetings where reform proposals are expected to feature prominently.
