UN agencies warn Sudan humanitarian aid could collapse over funding shortfall

UN aid agencies warned on Monday that funding shortfalls could compel them to reduce humanitarian operations in Sudan, where the United Nations has identified the world’s most severe hunger and displacement crisis. The agencies, which coordinate food distribution, health services and shelter for millions of people affected by the ongoing conflict, said that donor contributions have fallen well below the levels required to sustain current programmes.

The shortfall threatens to curtail assistance to an estimated 8 million people facing acute food insecurity and over 5 million displaced across the country. Officials emphasized that without an urgent increase in financial support, essential services such as nutrition programmes for children, medical care for conflict‑related injuries, and emergency water supplies may be scaled back, potentially exacerbating the humanitarian emergency. The agencies called on governments and private donors to meet the funding gap to prevent a further deterioration of conditions in Sudan.
