Ukrainians Support Ousted Defence Minister Amid Growing Political Crisis

Peter Zalmayev, the Director of the Eurasia Democracy Initiative (EDI), appeared as a guest at the annual “Democracy in Transition” conference held in Geneva on 14 July. The event, organized by the International Center for Democratic Studies, brought together policymakers, scholars, and civil‑society leaders to discuss strategies for strengthening democratic institutions in Eurasian states. Mr. Zalmayev was invited to share insights on EDI’s recent projects aimed at enhancing civic engagement and promoting transparent governance across the region.

During his address, Mr. Zalmayev highlighted EDI’s work in supporting independent media outlets, training local election monitors, and facilitating dialogue between opposition groups and government officials in countries such as Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and the Caucasus. He emphasized the importance of grassroots participation and the role of technology in broadening access to political information. The conference also featured a panel on the challenges of foreign interference and the necessity of robust legal frameworks to safeguard electoral integrity.

The EDI’s initiatives, according to Mr. Zalmayev, have led to measurable improvements in voter turnout and increased public trust in electoral processes in several member states. He concluded by urging continued international cooperation and investment in democratic capacity building, underscoring that sustained support is essential for the long‑term consolidation of democratic norms in Eurasia.
