Ukraine develops faster interceptor drones to counter Russian jet-powered Shahed drones

Kyiv is accelerating a program to produce faster, more capable interceptor drones aimed at countering Russia’s latest generation of jet‑powered Shahed attack drones. The Russian unmanned aerial systems, which incorporate small turbojet engines, can reach higher speeds and altitudes than earlier propeller‑driven models, complicating Ukraine’s existing air‑defence measures. In response, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has tasked domestic aerospace firms and research institutes with developing a new class of interceptor UAVs that can match or exceed the performance envelope of the incoming threats.

The emerging interceptors are being designed with enhanced propulsion, advanced sensor suites and autonomous target‑tracking algorithms to improve reaction times and engagement ranges. Prototypes are undergoing flight trials, and officials say the goal is to field operational units within the next several months. If successful, the new drones would augment Ukraine’s layered defence network, providing a dedicated counter‑measure against the faster Shahed variants and strengthening the country’s ability to protect critical infrastructure and civilian areas from aerial attacks.
