UK vaccine damage scheme administration costs exceed £83m

New figures released by the Department of Health and Social Care show that the combined cost of administration and medical checks for the national health screening programme has now exceeded £83 million. The data, drawn from the NHS Financial Management Office, represent the cumulative spending for the first 18 months of the programme’s rollout.

The cost includes £45 million for administrative support—such as staffing, data management and logistics—and £38 million for the clinical components, including diagnostic tests, specialist consultations and follow‑up appointments. The figures were presented at a briefing to Parliament on Tuesday, with the programme’s chief executive noting that the expenditure is in line with the projected budget for the current fiscal year.

The Department will review the programme’s cost‑effectiveness in the coming quarter, citing the need to balance early detection benefits against rising operational expenses. The updated figures will inform future resource allocation decisions within the NHS’s broader strategy for preventive care.
