UK Ministers Propose £100k Cap on Expat Donations

Ministers have announced a proposal to impose a £100,000 annual cap on donations made by British expatriates, with the measure backdated to 25 March 2026. The initiative aims to standardise the contribution limits for overseas residents who support UK charities and political causes, aligning them with domestic donation thresholds.

Under the draft legislation, expatriate donors would be subject to the same financial ceiling that applies to residents, thereby preventing large, unregulated gifts from overseas. The back‑dating provision would retroactively apply the cap to any contributions received from 25 March 2026 onward, ensuring that the policy takes effect immediately for future donations while maintaining consistency with existing financial regulations.

The proposal is currently under parliamentary review, with stakeholders—including charity groups and expatriate associations—inviting comments on its potential impact.
