UK-built CubeSat to Enhance Solar Storm Warnings
A groundbreaking miniature instrument, MAGIC, is set to revolutionize space weather forecasting by providing critical warnings hours in advance of solar storms hitting Earth. Developed by Imperial College in the UK, MAGIC is a key component of the European Space Agency's (ESA) HENON mission, a CubeSat designed to monitor the heliosphere and detect potential threats from the sun. Scheduled for launch in early 2027, HENON will be equipped with a range of instruments, including MAGIC, which is specifically designed to track magnetic field fluctuations in deep space.
HENON's mission is to provide early warnings of solar storms, which can have devastating effects on Earth's magnetic field, communication systems, and power grids. Current space weather forecasting systems typically rely on data from Earth-orbiting satellites, which can provide only minutes of warning before a storm hits.
