UK Authorities Seize Assets in Crackdown on Spam Texts

The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) carried out a series of search warrants on Wednesday, seizing laptops, mobile phones and documents from residences and offices linked to five companies operating in London, Liverpool, Bolton, Burnley and Swansea. The action follows a growing investigation into a car‑finance mis‑selling scandal in which consumers reportedly received spam text messages advertising finance deals that were later found to be misleading or unsuitable.

The warrants were part of a broader crackdown on the companies’ marketing practices, which the ICO alleges involved the distribution of unsolicited messages that encouraged customers to sign up for finance agreements without fully disclosing the terms or risks. By targeting the firms’ communications infrastructure and record‑keeping systems, the ICO aims to gather evidence of potential breaches of the Data Protection Act and the Consumer Credit Act.
